Guide: Getting Hired Again, Step by Step

From 'not prohibited' to a seat: your documentation packet, the consent you will sign, which carriers to target, and the first-conversation script.

  1. Assemble the packet before you apply anywhere: SAP completion proof, eligibility and negative return-to-duty test status, and your follow-up plan's remaining shape.
  2. Target carriers with real safety departments first — fleets that already administer follow-up plans under 49 CFR 40.309.
  3. In the first conversation, say it completed and in the past tense: violation, full SAP process completed, return-to-duty test passed, follow-up plan running to a stated date. Then hand over the packet.
  4. Sign the written consent for the pre-employment full Clearinghouse query promptly — the carrier cannot legally skip it, and delay reads as doubt.
  5. If a carrier says no, ask whether the plan is the reason and note the answer. Patterns in the noes tell you which carrier type to target next — that is the method working, not failing.

Included in the $49 ReturnToDuty Kit

  • Choosing a SAP: the price table ($399–$600 bundled is normal), the questions to ask before you designate, split-pricing and bait-pricing red flags, and the payment-plan truth
  • The no-job path in full: registering as an owner-operator in the Clearinghouse and designating a C/TPA for the test — what step services charge versus doing each piece yourself
  • The follow-up years: plan math (at least 6 tests in year one, up to 5 years), changing employers mid-plan, and what a new employer must do
  • Getting hired: the SAP-friendly carrier search method, what to say on an application and in an interview, and the consent forms — honestly, with no invented list of companies
  • Records and licenses: Clearinghouse consent, what employers actually see, the state downgrade defense timeline, and the cost tracker worksheet
